What service(s) and/or product(s) do you offer?
Public meetings featuring the history of Appleton, history fairs displaying various items related to Appleton’s history, a cemetery walk featuring historic folks, and a museum and research center both displaying various aspects of Appleton’s history and serving folks with their various questions about history.
What inspired you to start your business?
Appleton’s sesquicentennial sparked an interest in there being some focus specifically on Appleton’s varied history.
What are 3 words that describe your business?
History is important!
If your business had a theme song, what would it be?
“Yesterday”
What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
Make the most of and enjoy each day.
What's something about your business nobody knows?
Are you kidding me? If nobody knows it, that must include me…so I don’t know.
What do you love most about being in Downtown Appleton?
It is near to where Appleton got its start.
If you could share a meal with any 4 individuals, living or dead, who would they be and why?
My Great-Great Grandfather who came to Neenah in 1849 to talk to him about what it was like then and how it changed over the next few years.
William Henry Jackson, the pioneer photographer to discuss his many adventures.
John C Fremont to talk about his many travels.
Abraham Lincoln to listen to his many stories.
What 3 items would you take with you on a deserted island?
Thoreau’s journals, a year’s supply of food and drink, and my lovely wife.
If you had to describe your business as an animal, which one would it be and why?
An Eagle. We as a Historical Society fly above and see the big picture of how the past is related to the present and the future.
Something else fun and unique about your business you want to share?
Our displays and presentations of Appleton’s past brings delight and sometimes tears to the eyes of those who visit us. We are memory joggers and keepers of the memory bank.
