Ethnic Dining Adventure at Queen Bee
by Chris Church from Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau
I first noticed the sign in the window at the Queen Bee restaurant in downtown Appleton which said they offered Afghani food on Thursdays at lunch. Because the Queen Bee is famous for its great breakfasts (you gotta try their hash browns—they’re awesome) as well as their down-home American menu, the sign really caught my attention. To tell you the truth, I’m not a real adventurous person when it comes to food. I pretty much stick to the basics (pizza, French fries, burgers), but I have to admit I was intrigued. Hmm…ethnic food only on Thursdays and only at lunch. The gauntlet had been thrown down! So, one Thursday when I had a day off from work, my husband and I wandered in and asked about their lunch special. The owner told us what they had that day, and after listening to her describe several options, I decided on one of them. “Oh, no, you get everything that I just mentioned. It’s all on one plate. And it’s a lot to eat.” She wasn’t kidding. There were 8 different things to sample, and it was all good. The only thing I didn’t love was the dessert. I’m not really into sweets, so I left it alone. But both my husband and I tried everything else, and we kept quizzing one another-- “Hey, did you try that? Isn’t that super?” I have no idea what the names of the different dishes were, but I DO know this. As soon as I can, I want to get back and try their Thursday lunch offerings again. According to the owner, they change the menu often, so it’ll be fun to go back and see what they have. |
