PARK(ing) Day: Final Installment for 2016 Art on the Town Season!

Wrapping up the 2016 Art On The Town series will be PARK(ing) Day on September 16 when small spaces and parking stalls in Downtown will be converted to mini-parks. PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers, and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks.

Art On The Town events take place on the third Fridays in the months of May through September from 6 to 9 p.m., and draw people out to stroll the sidewalks of Downtown Appleton and take in all genres of art.

Artists and performers will be showcased at a host of Downtown venues – shops, restaurants, museums, the Creative Parklet Place, Houdini Plaza and even in the mini-parks– creating their art, performing their talent and engaging with visitors who stop to inquire about their craft. Many offer their items for sale.

“This series is part of our efforts to foster a Creative Economy in the heart of the Downtown,” says Anne Wiegman, ADI’s marketing director. “People really get a chance to relax and engage in conversation with many of the artists and performers, and in some cases, create their own piece of art. The lineup includes something for all ages.”

In addition to the mini parks created by eight of the participating Art On The Town venues, there will be four special features:

· The Creative Downtown Appleton Team has teamed with Miron Construction to present their “It Starts with a Dream” interactive mobile display at the Creative Parklet next to Copper Rock Coffee.  A temporary, pop-up art gallery featuring the work of artist Cole Lato will be showcased in the parking spaces next to the Parklet.

· Strathmore Artist Papers™ wants to inspire people to make art, so they’ll be giving away FREE Strathmore fine art pads and additional art supplies during Art On The Town. Each visitor to the Strathmore Paper Drop event will receive one bag with a pad of Strathmore® paper plus other art supplies to get started making art. Recipients are encouraged to pay it forward by giving their art or a gift of art supplies to someone in a “random act of artistic kindness,” and to share what they made online using the hashtag #createmoresharemore.

· Local food trucks and Downtown restaurants will be serving up your favorite fun foods from 4:30-8:30pm.

“With the popularity of the Food Truck Rallies this summer, we felt this would add value to Art On The Town, a night when people are already exploring Downtown Appleton and all it has to offer,” explains Jennifer Stephany, executive director of Creative Downtown Appleton, inc.

Supporting the summer-long series are sponsors Appleton International Airport, Tundraland Home Improvements, Bazil’s Pub, Capital Credit Union and the City of Appleton.

To assist visitors in planning their Art On The Town outings, we have has posted a map and artist details on its website, www.appletondowntown.org and at all participating businesses.
