Appleton Downtown, Inc., which is celebrating it's 25 the anniversary this year, offers a lineup of family-friendly events this summer including outdoor movies and a Friday evening of Art on the Town featuring chalk artistry.
Budding artists can participate in kid-friendly activities in Houdini Plaza on Friday, July 15 as part of the monthly Art on the Town series that offers rhythm and music, performing arts, visual arts and more. The event also features the art of food and beverage at venues throughout downtown.
Chalk On The Town starts at 2 p.m. with fun activities in Houdini Plaza including balloon animals, a photo booth, storytime, music and face painting. All materials are provided free and no registration is needed. Partners for the event include Appleton Public Library, The Building for Kids Children’s Museum, Appleton YMCA, The Trout Museum of Art and Wisconsin Public Television.
Artists ages 13 and older can create their artwork on assigned downtown parcels anytime that day before 7 p.m. This event also is free.
Artists must pre-register before July 11, 2016, at 5 p.m. and must provide their own chalk. Participants can check in anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Appleton Downtown, Inc. office, 116 N. Appleton St. and between 2 and 5 p.m. at The Trout Museum of Art adjacent to the plaza.
Participating artists must check in to receive their assigned sidewalk location. Space will be based on availability and indicated preference. Participants may not begin chalking until they receive their officially assigned space at check-in.
Drawing time goes until 7:30 p.m. at which time judging will take place. Winning artists will be awarded Downtown Appleton gift certificates in the amounts of $100 first prize, $50-second prize, $25 third prize, and $25 People's Choice.
That evening, patrons of Art On the Town can enjoy the chalk masterpieces throughout Downtown as well as stopping at 22 participating business locations to view a variety of art
forms, enjoy demonstrations and meet the artists.
Art on the Town continues August 19, 2016, with Paint On the Town where participants can paint their own masterpiece in Houdini Plaza, and Sept. 16 for PARK(ing) Day when everyone can enjoy the new "mini parks" located throughout Downtown.
The 2016 Art On the Town series is made possible through the generous support of the Appleton International Airport, City of Appleton, Tundraland, Bazil’s Pub and Capital Credit Union.
