Appleton Downtown's Annual Chalk Walk Returns Friday, July 16

Downtown Appleton is preparing for this year’s Chalk Walk, the special feature for July’s Downtown Creates… event series.  This popular annual event returns and Appleton Downtown Inc. (ADI) has additional chalk and art related activities happening, as well!

Anyone wanting to share their artistic talents is encouraged to register now to take part in the chalk competition on Friday, July 16.  Entrants can choose to be “In It to Win It” or chalk “Just for Fun”.  Each level has their own series of prize opportunities.  “Just for Fun” will have a first and second place People’s Choice Award of $50 selected by the public; the week following Chalk Walk (July 19-25) check out Appleton Downtown’s Facebook page to vote for your favorite piece.

Artists who register for “In It to Win It” will be eligible to win the $500 cash Grand Prize! This grand prize will be decided by a panel of judges.  Along with the Grand Prize, second place will go home with $250 and third place with $100.  “In It to Win It” participants will also have the public voting for their favorite piece the week following for one People’s Choice Winner of $75.

Artists must pre-register to claim their spot in the Downtown Creates… Chalk Walk.  There is no cost to participate, although artists must supply their own chalk and any other materials needed.  Artists will be placed throughout the mile stretch of College Avenue in Downtown Appleton and along the river in the RiverHeath community.

“We are so excited to continue the annual Chalk Walk this summer,” states Lynn Hardy, marketing director for Appleton Downtown Inc. “Art is good for the soul and decorating the sidewalks with the chalk masterpieces is a community favorite each year.”

The community will be invited to enjoy the chalk masterpieces in the open-air environment either while the chalk artists are at work that Friday, that Friday evening when pieces are complete, or even throughout the weekend at their own leisure (weather permitting).

Saturday, July 18th will also host Downtown Sidewalk Shops at various businesses throughout the day.  Stroll College Avenue and shop local in an open-air environment while you enjoy the recently created chalk pieces.  The Sidewalk Shops will go all day long, so plan a time to visit downtown!
